Opensource is a fabulous methodology that promote access to the end's product source materials.We can make changes if you like to change the way of working or whatever,then redistribute without paying royalties or fees.But we have to get license .The classic licenses are GPL, LGPL, BSD, and MIT .When our code goes to live as an opensource, people improve it,adapt it and fix bugs.
The Mozilla and google makes an astonishing trend among the opensource community.Google runs the google code service,In this service google provides bunch of opensource project,APIs ,code search..etc.That's what still google shine.So folks mind it "the future is opensource everthing".
